What X does with a GIF
GIFs attached to a post autoplay in the timeline, muted, on a loop, with a small GIF badge — and unlike a video attachment there is no play button and no view counter. X accepts GIFs up to 15 MB when posted from the web and 5 MB from the mobile apps; the maximum dimensions are 1280 × 1080. After upload, X converts the file to a short video for playback, so the loop you post is preserved but the colours are re-encoded. Sharp, high-contrast clips survive this better than subtle gradients.
Because the GIF is converted server-side, there is little point uploading a very large one. 640 px wide is comfortably above the width the timeline renders at on a phone, and 15 fps is smooth for camera footage. If you are posting from the app, use the Chat preset (320 px) or shorten the clip to stay under 5 MB.
Choosing the moment
A timeline GIF is watched for two or three seconds before the reader scrolls on, so the first frame matters more than the last: put the recognisable moment at the start, not after a build-up.
